By: Kelly Renaul

Massage therapy is one of the fastest growing professions today, especially here in the United States. There are so many different places to establish yourself in your career, from medical institutions to salons to world-class resorts and spas. Whichever direction you would like to steer your career towards, here are some ideas for you to keep in mind.

First of all, most people at first think of a massage as simply a form of relaxation. However, it has been medically proven to improve circulation and decrease cancer cells in some patients, so the benefits go way beyond just relaxation. The licensed therapists that are trained in this field enhance their relaxation skills as well, not to mention their muscle tone, flexibility, and strength improves as well. Those who give and those who receive massages have higher energy levels, better movement of their joints, and overall easier body movement.

There are many different schools and training programs to become a massage therapist all over the country, and usually the courses are such that 600 hours of instruction are explored before licensing can happen. The certifications range from licenses to masters degrees, depending on how in depth you want your training to be. There are also different types of massages that you can specialize in too, from sports medicine massage to therapeutic to reflexology, acupressure, hand massage, and many, many more. Set amounts of hours are reserved for basic instruction and specialized instruction as well to make sure that you get a full, rounded exposure to all corners of the field.

Some of the courses in massage school also focus on some of the business aspects of the field so that you can be completely prepared when you begin to take on your own clients. This is especially nice for those who want to start their own business and venture out into the world on their own. It is more than helpful to understand the business side of things as well as the side that deals with the actual services of massage too.

If you are looking at different programs and are wondering what you need to pinpoint about each one to help you decide which one to go to, keep in mind not only things like tuition and location but also you may want one that will lead to licensure that is national. If you should move and relocate at some point in your life, youll want to make sure that you will be able to practice in any state that you might be living in, not just the one that the school is located in. These are just some of the things you should think about if you are considering a career as a massage therapist.
