Scalp Psoriasis That You Need To Know

Present in more than half the people who suffer from psoriasis, scalp psoriasis is fairly common. Other than the scalp, scalp psoriasis can also be found by the ears, on the forehead, and on the back of the neck. In rare cases, scalp psoriasis is found by itself where psoriasis does not affect any other parts of the body such as the more common locations of the knees and elbows.
As with other forms of psoriasis, scalp psoriasis is characterized by red and inflamed skin patches that are covered with white scales. These patches may itch and, when scratched, flake off. Mild scalp psoriasis has fine scaling while more serious cases have thicker plaques and may result in hair loss.
Different treatments, but no cure, are available for scalp psoriasis. Many psoriasis products can be purchased over the the counter. Depending on the severity of your condition, your doctor may recommend that you get prescription medications.
Tar based products such as shampoos and treatments such as steroid injections, topical steroids, or ultraviolet light therapy are remedies for psoriasis that are designed to relieve scaling or itching. Since they may reduce scaling, tar products are good for most cases of scalp psoriasis. They are typically in shampoo form but may also be in a cream.
Natural remedies, like olive oil or apple cider vinegar can also be used to treat scalp psoriasis. Before massaging it into your scalp, warm the olive oil. Apple cider vinegar needs to be added to water before it is applied to the scalp. Keep it on for an hour or two before washing it out. Both itching and flaking can be reduced by these at-home natural remedies.
Steroid injections should only be used if there aren't many plaques on the scalp. Steroids in topical form are preferred for severe cases, though they can also help clear up a mild outbreak of scalp psoriasis. Long term use is not recommended.
However you and your doctor treat your scalp psoriasis, remember that new and more effective treatments are always being developed. By staying on top of your condition, you'll be able to best control its symptoms of itching and flaking.
