By: Ray Eddings

Many women experience a yeast infection at some point in their lives. Infections occur when a fungus that is normally found in the body has a population explosion. Reducing the conditions that can encourage this growth can prevent frequent yeast infections. Here are a few things that one can do to reduce the chances of a yeast infection.

Clothing

Loose clothing made from natural materials can greatly reduce the chances of a yeas infection. Tight clothing and synthetic materials trap air creating the ideal conditions for an infection. Choosing looser cotton clothing can minimize the risk.

Moisture

The fungus that creates a yeast infection thrives in moist environments. Consequently, reducing the amount of moisture on the body can reduce the chances of an infection. Thoroughly drying all potentially infected areas after showering or bathing is important. After swimming one should thoroughly towel dry and change into dry clothes as soon as possible.

Douching

Douching can increase the chances of a yeast infection. It can alter the pH balance which could potentially lead to a yeast infection.

Wiping

It is important to remember that the yeast involved in an infection is naturally present in a healthy body. The yeast present in one’s intestinal tract can travel from the rectum to the vaginal area. This happens while wiping from back to front after using the toilet. One should always wipe front to back.

Food

As with many health related conditions the food one eats has a great affect on the possibility of a yeast infection. Yogurt contains lactobacilius acidophilis, a bacterium that competes in the body with yeast. Consequently it keeps the yeast population under control and prevents infection.

These are just a few tips for preventing or controlling yeast infection. Often a healthy and hygienic lifestyle is enough to prevent frequent yeast infections; sometimes it is not.
