High fuel prices are crippling the airline industry and chopping into household budgets, but no sector of the economy has been hit harder than the trucking industry, executives and analysts say.

How hard is the trucking industry being hit?

Diesel prices are going up at an unprecedented pace. The national average is now just under $4.50 per gallon and this is up .16 from a week prior and the overall price is up from $3.35 at the start of the year!

Compared to last year there are 21% more trucking companies that are filing for bankruptcy, mainly they are being driven out of business by the cost of fuel which has made their business model untenable.

This catastrophe for the truckers is hurting every other aspect of the American economy and beyond. Seventy percent of the goods that Americans consume are trafficked from manufacturers to outlets to consumers by trucks. As a consequence, then, of the increase in costs for the trucking industry, just about everything else will have an increase in price beyond what it would be just accounting for inflation. Go to the supermarket and you will already see this impact. Food prices are being hit by inflation, the artificial scarcity brought on by the shift of growing crops for food to growing crops for energy and the increased costs for the truckers to move food to the supermarket shelves.

Another place where the impact is felt is highway fatalities. Truckers do have strict regulations on how many hours they can drive and how many hours they have to rest in between. Under ordinary circumstances these regulations get stretched and truckers are on coffee intravenous and work extended hours driving on our roads and highways. But now there are less trucking companies and less truckers carrying the same load so something’s gotta give somewhere. Truckers are also willing to work longer hours because they are making less profit per hour. So, in a very direct way, the increased price of diesel is costing lives right here in the USA. This is in addition to the lost lives due to biodiesel worldwide because of the shift from growing crops for food to growing crops for energy. Those number in the 10s of millions dieing from starvation and is a hushed up holocaust happening right now.

The devastation visited upon our economy by the Bush administration’s policies and wars as well as the Federal Reserve’s tinkering is going to be with us for decades. If we want to maintain anything close to the lifestyle that we have enjoyed in previous years then we need to get creative on the grassroots level with real solutions disseminated in the fastest way possible, which right now is the internet.
