One of the things that fascinates me about doll collecting is the interplay between doll-loving and doll-collecting. What I mean is that most people who collect dolls today first started out as doll lovers. On the other hand, we could say that those who are doll lovers today will probably be the doll collectors of tomorrow. A love of dolls will naturally encourage a love of collecting them, and those who collect dolls will deepen in their appreciation and love for them. What interests people about doll collecting? I think it's mostly about nostalgia -- the urge to recapture a time and feelings from the past. It seems that for many doll collectors the older the doll, the better. For example many doll collectors collect porcelain dolls, or porcelain doll kits (if they enjoy making their own outfits) -- and these dolls are like history on display, under glass. Porcelain dolls are not the kind of thing that you see most young girls today playing with -- they're a part of a world that has just about vanished. Did I mention doll accessories? Well here's another area for doll collectors-- collecting doll houses. Some folk go all out and make their own doll house, as doll house plans are widely available today. It is even possible to use the capabilities of a PC to draw up plans for a doll house -- and this will save you the time and expense involved in actually constructing them, until you find a design that you like. When adding to your doll collection, it is important that you try to collect quality dolls and accessories. And if you are looking for quality doll accessories, you can't get anything better than Amish doll furniture. Amish craftsmen are world renowned for their attention to detail and superior craftsmanship, and they put this same emphasis on quality and craftsmanship into their doll furniture construction as well. And if you're looking to find dolls that are really collectible, you simply can't go wrong if you collect Franklin mint dolls. I'm sure you've seen these advertised -- we all have. They feature the faces of many famous people: movie stars, royalty, TV personalities. Franklin mint dolls are of course highly collectible and many of them have appreciated greatly in price since their initial introduction. And when it comes to nostalgia, many ladies today are trying to recapture their childhood by collecting Betsy McCall dolls. These dolls were first publicized in McCall's Magazine in the early 50s -- and they are highly sought after today -- not only the dolls but also Betsy McCall dolls accessories as well. I wanted to take a moment to tell you about the American Girl Company. They are making a line of doll clothes that perfectly match outfits (which they also make available) for little girls to wear. Little girls seem to love this concept, as it allows them to dress their dial-up to look just like themselves -- sort of like having a little sister with you at all times. And while I'm talking about the little kids, we shouldn't forget other areas of collecting such as Bratz dolls, my little pony and similar products. These will, no doubt prove to be quite collectible in the future -- so make an effort to include them in your doll collection while they are inexpensive to purchase. Perhaps your tastes run in a different line -- for you there are primitive dolls. These are dolls that are constructed to resemble the kinds of simple playthings used by girls generations ago, especially during the early eras of our country's history. They make use of simple materials and plain fabrics, and have a homey, down-home appearance. So regardless of your tastes and interests, the field of doll collecting and doll appreciation is a vast and growing one. Right this minute there is probably a doll collector collecting dolls in a style or type that will interest you. And at the end of the day, when you close out this earthly life, you will have the added blessing of being able to pass on your valued doll collection to the next generation -- so that they too might enhance their love and appreciation for these small companions.
